    Pan Kaiming's testimony:

    "On December 14, 1937,some Japanese soldiers broke into my house and took me away.They put me in the former Overseas Hostel for one day.At 2 o'clock next afternoon,I was roped together with some three hundred people and 4 o'clock,we were escorted to Meitangang to be machine-gunned.There seemed some sparkles appearing in my eyes and I fainted away.About 9 or 10 in the evening,I came to my consciousness and found that I was buried in corpses.I asked myself if I was still alive or became a ghost.Because of the darkness,I escaped from the death. "

While the Memorial was under construction,monuments were also erected in memory of Chinese compatriots killed by the Japanese soldiers.The monuments are scattered in 17 spots of the city where the massive slaughters took place or where thousands of vitims were buried.This picture shows the monument at the Zhongshan Wharf where more than 10,000 people were killed.

    The total number of civilians and prisoners of war murdered in Nanking and its vicinity during the first six weeks of the Japanese occupation was over 200,000.These figures do not take into account those persons whose bodies were destroyed by throwing them into the Yangtze River or otherwise disposed of by the Japanese. --- From Judgement of the International Millitary Tribunal.

On the Zhongshan Road of the city.Nanjing residents roped together were escorted by the Japanese soldiers to the suburbs to be massacred.

On December 16, 1937,about five to six thousand people were arrested as "captured Chinese soldiers" on the Zhongshan Road in the city proper.Among them,there were even elderly people and children as well.

    Nanjing residents were rounded up and hauled out of the city for execution.

    Organized and wholesale murder of male civilians was conducted with the apparent sanction of the commanders on the pertext that Chinese soliders had removed their uniforms and were mingling with the population.Group of Chinese civilians were formed,bound with their  hands behind their backs,and marched outside the walls of the city where they were killed in groups by machine gun fire and with bayonets. --- From Judgement of the International Military Tribunal
